Dracula, the Addams Family and a Halloween disco for Mikeysline

Morning. Halloween weekend has landed and Inverness is leaning in: Dracula and Ghosts at Eden Court, Francis Rossi on Saturday night, Alison Moyet doing the Yazoo back catalogue tonight, and a proper spread of fancy-dress discos and club nights for anyone still planning to be upright at 1am. There's also a nice bit of news to kick things off: beavers are being released back into the River Ness catchment, up to 15 family groups, first time in about 500 years. Welcome back, lads. On with the weekend.

This Weekend

A lot on. Pick your night and commit.

Friday

  • Alison Moyet: Eden Court, Fri 30 Oct, 20:00. The 2026 tour is Yazoo tracks and selections from the minutes and Other. If that's your era, this is the night.
  • MØSS. live at An Seòmar: Fri 30 Oct, 19:00, from £15. Full live show, back in Inverness bigger than last time. Flagged this on Monday, so if you booked, you're sorted.
  • Ghosts: The Possession of Button House: Eden Court, Fri 30 Oct, 14:15 and 19:30 (also Sat 19:30 and Sun 19:15). The BBC comedy on the big screen for Halloween. Was in Monday's edition.
  • Dracula: Eden Court, Fri 30 Oct, 19:45 (also Sat 18:00). Jonathan Harker, a remote castle, a centuries-old vampire. Does what it says on the coffin.
  • Pressure: Eden Court, Fri 30 Oct, 19:00. The 72 hours before D-Day, with Captain Stagg trying to read the British weather. Andrew Scott on form.
  • Lee Evans Tribute: North Kessock Village Hall, Fri 30 Oct, 19:30, from £19.50. A night of laughs out in Kessock.
  • Halloween Riff Fest: The Tooth and Claw, Fri 30 Oct, 20:00, from £10. Launch night for Frostleaf Promotions, eight bands over two nights. Monday's edition had this one.

Saturday

  • Francis Rossi Songbook: Quo – Past, Present, Future: Eden Court, Sat 31 Oct, 20:00. Brand new show from one of Britain's most-loved musicians. A proper Saturday night.
  • Halloween disco and fundraiser for Mikeysline: Merkinch Community Centre, Sat 31 Oct, 12:00 to 23:00. A full day for a cause that matters. Go, dress up, chuck some money in the bucket.
  • Addams Family Values: Eden Court, Sat 31 Oct, 14:00 and 15:00 (also Sun 14:15). The macabre family back at it. Grand shout for a Halloween afternoon with the kids.
  • SOLAIRE: Halloween edition: The Innes, Sat 31 Oct, 14:00, from £15. The scariest Solaire session yet, apparently.
  • KIMMIC at The Botanic House: Sat 31 Oct, 21:00, from £5. The high-energy Scottish duo back for a Halloween special. A fiver.
  • 2NDFACE x NOCTRNL present KANDER: An Seomar, Sat 31 Oct, 23:00, from £10. The annual Halloween late one, with Kander's debut Inverness gig. For the committed.

Sunday

  • The Royal Ballet: Manon: Eden Court, Sun 1 Nov, 14:00. 18th-century Paris, love and money, the Royal Ballet beamed in. Was in Monday's edition.
  • The Others: Eden Court, Sun 1 Nov, 19:30 (also Sat 19:45). Nicole Kidman in the gothic supernatural one. A good Sunday-night chill-up-the-spine.

Worth Doing

A riverside walk for the colours, while they're still there

Someone was asking recently whether it was even worth coming to Inverness in late November, and the answers kept coming back to the same thing: get the autumn walks in now, because another week or two and the leaves are gone. The Ness Islands came up most, and it's hard to argue with it. Stroll down from the cathedral, loop the islands, take the long way back. Free, 10 minutes from the middle of town, and the river in low autumn light does most of the work for you. If you're hosting anyone this weekend, this is your Sunday morning.

Reader Question

Someone was asking the other day for proper local nicknames for places around Inverness: the Merk (or the Kinch) for Merkinch, the Craigie for Craig Dunain, Nurn for Nairn, the ferry for South Kessock, and a few others I'll not print without a lawyer present. The thread got lively.

So: what's your favourite Inverness nickname for a place, a street, a school, a shop? The dafter the better. Hit reply, I'll round up the best in a future issue.

Have a cracking weekend. Costumes on, Button House booked, and spare a thought for the beavers trying to find a decent flat in the Ness catchment.

Cheers, Colin

Evening! 🎃 Halloween's packed away, it's dark by teatime, and Thursday's Bonfire Night, so at least there's a bit of a glow to look forward to. Firelight at the Castle is the pick of that. Before the fun stuff, though: extra late-night trains north of Inverness, and the council wants to hear how you'd close a £39.2m gap (eh... above my pay grade?!) Then there's Hadestown on the big screen, a walk-through show at Eden Court, and a few nights worth booking before they go. Worth Knowing The bits...

Morning. The clocks go back on Sunday, which is nature's way of saying: get out this weekend while you've still got the daylight. And there's plenty on. Judge Jules and Tall Paul are turning Inverness Leisure Centre into a trance venue on Saturday afternoon (a sentence I did not expect to type), MacMuse are upstairs the same night, Shaun the Sheep's doing Halloween on the big screen on Sunday morning, and the trees along the Ness are, by all accounts, putting on a show. Here's the weekend....

Painful info... the winter gritters officially roll out on Wednesday, which is either reassuring or mildly ominous depending on your mood. Elsewhere this week: the Scottish Ensemble team up with Brìghde Chaimbeul for what should be a proper evening at Eden Court, Grease opens on Thursday, and the X99 bus row shows no signs of calming down. Here's your week. Worth Knowing The handful of things that'll actually shape your week. Winter gritting season starts Wednesday: Highland Council's winter...
